John Marshall

John Marshall is a creative practitioner, educator, and researcher. His work focuses on the digital design and fabrication of objects, products, and responsive environments through a recursive process where multiple stakeholders work together to realize shared goals.
Marshall has designed and led workshops on making sense of complex situations for various corporate and nonprofit organizations. He has been a reviewer and juror for various journals, conferences, and academic programs in design, technology, engineering, and architecture (e.g., ACM SIGGRAPH, CoDesign journal, Cumulus Conference, International Journal of Engineering Education, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, and Leonardo/The International Society for the Arts, Sciences, and Technology).
Marshall is a tenured associate professor of art and design and an associate professor of architecture at the University of Michigan. He was the Founding Director of the Master of Design (MDes) in Integrative Design program at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design from 2014 to 2020. Marshall holds a Ph.D. in digital design and fabrication technology from Robert Gordon University, a master of arts in Art as Environment from Manchester Metropolitan University, a master of fine arts in sculpture from Ohio State University, and a bachelor of arts in fine art with honors from the Glasgow School of Art.
Previously, John worked in new product development at Evenflo Company, Inc., where he was instrumental in transitioning the company to a rapid prototyping-based product development process. Marshall spent five years as a consultant building virtual prototypes of public art projects for Malcolm Cochran Studio. He also taught 3D design at Leeds College of Art & Design in the UK.
